The last post, which you can view below, was about the increasingly popular Taylor Swift and your newest acolytes Travis Kelce. The students explored how relationships and friendships influence our personal style. And they had MUCHO QUE DECIR about that topic. That discuss was fiery (embers still wisping through the air); however, this new discussion took on novel dimensions.

The Chisme bus has added its next stop on our talking tour: Ariana Grande’s choice in “other people’s partners.” ‘Before you bat an eye, or practice synchronized rolling, let me explain. This topic galvanized my otherwise checked-out seniors (and some juniors too). The table talk was pretty deep as we navigated the waters of the relationships, culpability, and lopsided reporting. It was another Conversation Creator!

Add some PIZZAZZ to class WITH HOT TOPICS! This was supposed to be a 10-minute segment in my Spanish 5 class. However, we ended up discussing the themes associated with Taylor and Travis’s love story for 45 minutes. And because I know teachers don’t like to recreate the wheel, I have included the slide deck with all the frontloading questions below.

Origin Story

At the beginning of the year, we discussed a range of different topics related to celebrities, such as perfect matches, age differences, etc. It was a HUGE then, but somehow it slowly fizzled out. I actually thought it might have been a waste of time. HOWEVER, The other day, one of my students, shared their appreciation for this segment. He actually noted how much he learned and loved the conversations that ensued (I often teach expressions that they wouldn’t otherwise learn in class). Motivated by this feedback, I decided to rekindle this segment, and this was one of our first discussions.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as our reintroduction coincided with the buzz of the Super Bowl, providing an excellent springboard for discussion. We focused on the dynamics between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, particularly how his style seemed to change depending on his pareja. To add an extra layer of engagement, we incorporated a relatable meme, which not only amplified the excitement but also fostered a more interactive vibe in class.
